Common Cleaner Wrasse, occurs singly, in pairs, and in groups in conspicuous locations throughout a reef. Different varieties have different color patterns; some are a dark color with a silver streak, while others are white with a dark streak and a bright yellow area at the tail. In an aquarium 30 gallons or larger, it needs to be kept with a large number of community fish which it can clean and thus obtain food. It may accept substitute foods such as chopped seafoods, brine shrimp, and live black worms. It should be fed at least three times daily. This species of Cleaner Wrasse is more hardy than the others, but is still difficult to feed and maintain, and should only be kept by experienced aquarists.

This beautiful fish is royal blue, with a black palette pattern on the side and a yellow tail. Of the thousands of fish available to the trade, this is one of the most popular of them all! It is widely distributed throughout the Central, Southern and Western Pacific, and like all fish collected from many different locations, quality varies from one collection location to another. Beware of cheap specimens. It is shy, especially when first introduced to the aquarium, and should be provided with coral, live rock, or other suitable shelter sites. This tang will lie on is side (often startling those unaware of it's behavior) if it cannot find a suitable hiding place, or when first introduced into the aquarium. This species is usually more docile than many other Surgeonfishes, and gets along great in a peaceful community or reef tank. Recommended Tank size: Requires a 20 gallon or larger aquarium with a number of hiding places and plenty of room to swim.To keep multiple specimens, introduce the entire lot at once into the marine system. Food and diet: In nature it feeds almost entirely on brown macroalgae and should be offered a wide a variety of foods including plenty of algae. Although Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of seaweed and algae. The True Percula Clownfish is the fish most people picture when they imagine a marine aquarium. With their bright orange body color, divided by bands of elegant white outlined in black, Amphiprion percula is the essence of beauty. However, it is the famous symbiotic relationship the True Percula Clownfish has with various anemones that truly captures the imagination of most aquarists. In the wild, True Percula Clownfish is commonly associated with anemones such as Heteractis magnifica or Stichodactyla mertensii. However, in the home aquarium the True Percula Clownfish can do fine without an anemone partner. The True Percula Clownfish is not for the inexperienced, which poses a challenge for many new hobbyists. Percula Clownfish is often confused for the much easier to keep and more drably colored Ocellaris Clownfish. Therefore, care needs to be taken in choosing the appropriate clownfish for your home aquarium. The Percula Clownfish also has a thicker black outline to its white body stripes. Native to reefs across Oceania, the Indo-Pacific, and off the coast of Australia, the True Percula Clownfish is also known as the Clown Anemonefish. In the wild, this member of the Pomacentridae family grows to about 4-1/2 inches; however, captive specimens rarely exceed 3-1/2 inches in length. In the home aquarium, the True Percula Clownfish requires an aquarium of at least 30 gallons with a fair amount of live rock. Since the True Percula Clownfish is an omnivore, it requires a varied diet consisting of both meaty foods and herbivore preparations. Though not as hardy as the Ocellaris Clownfish, once acclimated to your system and eating, the True Percula Clownfish is a good candidate for reef aquariums. It is found in the Red Sea, to the Arabian Gulf, and the Arabian Sea, sometimes in large aggregations, but usually in solitude. These fish commonly inhabit the reef plateau just before the slope, and are generally found in depths of less than 20 meters (65'). Wild Sohal Tang specimens can grow to 16 inches; in an aquarium the adults will normally grow from 7 to 10 inches. The Sohal Tang is hardy, but susceptible to a disease known as Lateral Line erosion, or Hole in the Head. A vegetarian diet high in vitamins, especially beta-carotene can aid in the prevention of development of the disease. Stray voltages are also thought to contribute to this disease and the grounding probe may be beneficial. Sohal Tangs are very aggressive. They should not be kept with other Tangs or Wrasse species. They tend to be well-behaved with old tank mates, but try to kill any new additions. They are only suited for large aquariums with other aggressive fish. They do fairly well in very large reef systems with no other Tangs, and plenty of swimming room. Although Tangs will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important that they are offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. The Whitecheek Tang, also known as the Gold-rimmed Surgeonfish or Whitecheek Surgeonfish, has a purplish-blue body with a small white mark on the cheek between the mouth and eyes. The pectoral, anal, and dorsal fins are dark blue with blue highlights at the tip. The tail is blue with a yellow vertical bar. A yellow striping runs along the body, against the anal and dorsal fins, forming a distinctive wishbone-shaped marking. A 70 gallon or larger aquarium is adequate to provide plenty of swimming room. It is aggressive towards other Tangs, but peaceful with other fish in the tank. The Mexican turbo snail can reach a size of 4 in / 10 cm, but such a large size is uncommon and most specimens never get bigger than 2 in / 5 cm. The Mexican turbo snail is protected by thick brown shell shaped like a top or a turban. When the snail is frightened or wants to rest, it will withdraw itself into the irridescent interior of the shell and close the opening with a cover, a so called operculum. The Mexican turbo snail moves using its foot which can be extended out of the shell. The mouth and eyes can also be extended out of the shell, but all body parts are instantly retracted if the snail is spooked.

Turbo Snails (Astraea Tecta) Conehead Snail, Star Snail or Astrea Snail. These are the most commonly available �turbo snails� on the UK market. They are pyramidal in shape and some have projections on the shell which give them a star-like outline when viewed from above. These usually come from the cool waters of Baja California or Florida and are not really at home in typical reef tank temperatures. Worse still they inhabit rocky substrates rather than sand and they are consequently pretty much unable to right themselves if they topple over on a 'flatish' surface. In short these guys are sometimes a pretty bad idea.

The Yellow Hawaiian Tang is also known as the Yellow Sailfin Tang or Yellow Surgeonfish. For best care, it should be housed in an aquarium of at least 100 gallons with ample room to swim. Like other Tangs, this member of the Acanthuridae family demonstrates territorial aggression towards its own species, or Tangs in general. Therefore, it is best to keep just one Yellow Hawaiian Tang per aquarium, unless multiple Yellow Hawaiian Tangs are introduced into the system simultaneously. Although the Yellow Hawaiian Tang will eat meaty foods along with the other fish in the aquarium, it is important the Yellow Hawaiian Tang is offered plenty of marine based seaweed and algae. The Powder Blue Tang, also known as the Powder Blue Surgeonfish, has an oval body shape with extremely colorful, bold markings. It is prized for its vivid colors and bold markings, with several varying shades of blue accented by yellow and white. Bright yellow highlights the dorsal and pectoral fins, and striking blue-black markings outline the face and tail. A 100 gallon or larger aquarium is necessary to provide plenty of swimming room. Clown Trigger, Balistoides conspicillum, is native to the Indian and Pacific Ocean. Triggers are hardy fish and would be great for any level aquarist. It is among the largest and most aggressive of the Triggerfish. This should be considered when choosing to keep this fish. It should be kept only with equally aggressive tankmates who will be able to defend themselves. (Examples: large Puffers or Groupers.) Clown Triggers should not be kept with other members of its species. Also, keep in mind that this fish should be kept in a tank large enough to allow room for growth. Description: A very elusive coral sought out by reef keepers everywhere, the Dendro Coral is very similar to its close cousin the Sun Polyp Coral. They are the same genus but different species. They grow larger usually and have defining colors around the mouth and the white pattern on the tentacles is more prominent. The biggest difference, besides the obvious difference in growth pattern, is that the Dendro Coral will have its polyps extended during the day. It is a non-photosynthetic species so it will need to be fed regularly. A few individual pieces of mysid shrimp fed two or three times per week works well. These corals are very hardy and will grow quickly.These are very rare indeed; extremely nice colors throughout this colony. Very fat heads with BRIGHT yellow eyes and a brilliant red body rounded off with orange red tentacles. Diet and Feeding: Dendros do not need to be fed as often as normal sunpolyps. Once or twice a week is fine. A good suggestion is to turn the pumps off, and feed a mixture of frozen mysis and frozen spirulina. Fend off the fish in the tank (secret weapon: turkey baster) to make sure the dendrophyllia get as much food as possible (for a healthier and more beautiful coral). The Niger Trigger has a body that can range from dark blue to blue-green in color. Its tail is crescent-shaped, and may develop streamers as the fish matures. The teeth are usually red. Triggerfish are rather aggressive and are best kept with fish of similar size and aggression. Their diet should consist of vitamin-enriched meaty frozen foods, shrimp, snails (shell intact) as well as the occasional live food snack. Common Name: Blue Throat Trigger Fish, Blue Jaw Trigger Fish, Gilded Trigger Fish, Blue Chin Trigger Fish Scientific Name: Xanthichthys auromarginatus Size: Up to 11.8 inches Distinguishing Features: X. auromarginatus has an oval shaped, laterally flat body that is a bluish-gray color with white scale spots. There are bright metallic blue rings around the eyes. The males can be differentiated by the yellow outline on the fins and tail as well as the distinctive bright blue splash across the jaw and throat. The male�s coloration becomes more dramatic with age. Origin: From the Indo-Pacific, East Africa, and the Hawaiian Islands, to the north as far as Ryukyus and South to the Cocos-Keeling Atoll and New Caldonia. Natural Habitat: X. auromarginatus tend to form loose groups often located near drop-offs and ledges a few meters from the bottom. Feeding Requirements: In the wild these fish feed primarily on zoo-plankton, consisting mainly of copepods. In captivity they usually adapt quite easily to standard aquarium fare. They are quite accustomed to the idea that food should be floating in the water, as they find much of their food the same way in the wild. The green moray is really brown! The yellow tint of the mucus that covers its body, in combination with the drab background color, gives the fish its characteristic uniform green color. The moray�s muscular, scaleless body is laterally compressed (flattened side to side). The dorsal and anal fins are continuous with the short tail, or caudal fin, giving the appearance of a single fin running from the top of the head, along the back, around the tail, and underneath forward to mid-body. polyps of colonies of small anemone looking polyps similar to Sea Mats. Fine tentacles radiate out from the edge of the disc. These polyps may be connected at the base due to the way they spread by budding, but the polyps do not share a common base like Sea Mats do. Coloration is variable depending on type and are commonly shades of brown, green, yellow, pink or even red.

One of the easiest "corals", mushrooms will thrive in most aquariums. Placing pieces lower in the aquarium for indirect lighting and low water movement promote the best expansion, but they will but will adapt to a wide variety of conditions. Feeding is not necessary but may enhance growth. Individuals that are only tiny polyps when collected can grow to impressive mushrooms in only a few months. A variety of species are sold in the trade as Green Mushroom, but all are similar looking and require the same care. Green HairyMushrooms are collected on small pieces of randomly shaped rocks ranging from around 2"-5". plentiful as medium and small sized pieces. Green Frilly Mushrooms are usually the best buy in mushrooms since they are typically loaded with polyps compared to other other colors. Feeding: Feed small bits of clam meat placed under the star. Keep with live rock and live sand for grazing on algae and microorganisms. Care: Reef safe. May be harmful to some invertebrates, such as sponges. In an aquarium setting it prefers a well-lighted sandy or coral rubble substrate, with many rocky hiding places. The Blue Linckia Sea Star is very intolerant of sudden changes in oxygen levels, salinity and pH of the water, and cannot tolerate copper-based medications. Linckia, is a five-armed Starfish exotically colored in orange. These Stars feed on algae found on aquarium glass, rockwork, and substrate. They are completely reef safe and are a must have for anyone with either a fish-only or reef tank. Starfish are intolerant of sudden changes in oxygen levels, salinity and pH of the water, and cannot tolerate copper-based medications. The drip acclimation method is highly recommended for all Sea Stars due to their intolerability to changes in water chemistry. It should never be exposed to air while handling. Echinoderms are central disc organisms that use tube feet or spines to move their bodies. Sea Stars belong to the Class Asteroidea. This is made up of Starfish that usually have five arms with hundreds of small tube feet called podia lined on the underside of each arm. These arms are shaped like triangles and are connected to the central disc. Each podia is equipped with a suction cup end that allows for ease of movement and to control prey. On the underside of this disc is the mouth of the Starfish. Some Stars will release their stomach out from this mouth to engulf their prey.

Red Serpent Stars tend to be more sensitive to changes in water conditions than other serpents. Still, their bright red coloration makes them a powerful addition to mature aquariums. They are mostly nocturnal and tend to avoid bright light. Red serpents are avid scavengers and will feed on leftover meaty foods.

Brittle Starfish, Ophiarachna incrassata, is found on several of the reefs scattered throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Serpent Star Fish

Serpent Starfish, Ophioderma appressum for Atlantic, Ophiolepis superba for Tiger, and Ophioderma sp. for Red Tiger, exists in great numbers throughout the Indo-Pacific and the world and is often seen in amassed in groupings in the thousands. These stars are brown or cream decorated maroon or red markings. It is one of the hardest working aquarium cleaners available to our hobby. They are wonderful reef inhabitants that always seem to be looking for some uneaten bit of food and have the ability to get into just about any space. Acclimation should be extended over many hours, as starfish are sensitive to changes in temperature, pH, and specific gravity. Starfish are also completely intolreant of any copper in aquarium water, including copper-based medications. The Tiger Serpent is also known as the Harlequin Serpent Star, this echinoderm is best added to a reef aquarium where it can graze on algae and other microorganisms.

Quickly, the sponge pumps water through its body and out the hole at the top of its tube. The moving water carries the yellow dye, and you can see the dye moving with the water. Before long, all the dye is removed from the base of the sponge and is ejected from the sponge's chimney. This entire sequence of photographs covered only 1 minute. The sponge pumps so much water that you sometimes can feel the exhaust by placing your hand near the top of the sponge's tube.

Tube Sponge grows on a sand flat at East Chute. A sponge is an animal. It is made of a layer of cells that build a wall in the shape of a tube or bowl. These cells pump water through the sponge's wall, allowing the sponge to capture microscopic plankton for food. This Yellow Tube Sponge was living at a depth of 30 feet. Yellow Ball Sponge

Sponges are filter feeders. This species is a round form and is typically yellow or orange in color. In the ocean, they can filter hundreds of gallons of water through their bodies every day and they need feed constantly with a moderate to high flow to survive for any length of time in the home aquarium. Never expose your sponge to the air as their pores may become air-filled, causing them to starve and deteriorate.

The Red Ball Sponge, is often referred to as Red Boring Sponge, and members of this genus are found in a wide variety of colors such as red, yellow, and orange. The Red Ball Sponge requires a strong current and excellent water conditions. All sponges, including the Red Ball Sponge will require some very special care to survive in the home aquarium. The most critical concern is that it never be exposed to the air. If it is, air becomes trapped in the matrix of channels that line the inside of its body. With air blocking the path for planktonic food to reach its cells, it will basically starve. The Red Ball Sponge will require supplemental feeding with liquid plankton and other dissolved organic foods.

Giant Condy Anemone

Many marine hobbyists long to keep an anemone in their saltwater tanks. The Condylactis Anemone is often recommended to beginners because Condy Anemones are usually less demanding than many of the other anemones and because they are inexpensive ($5 - $10). Don't let the cheap price tag fool you into thinking that they don't have special requirements because they certainly do. The Condy Anemone needs a well established tank that has been set up for several months (preferably longer) and an aquarium that is showing stable and good water parameter readings. This animal is photosynthetic and it also needs to eat frozen or fresh fish food preparations. At a minimum, we would recommend at least power compacts with 50/50 bulbs (full spectrum/actinic) along with supplemental feedings every other day, or twice a week. Fresh seafood from the local market such as shrimp and clams work well. Cut the fresh, uncooked seafood into very small pieces and use tank tongs or a turkey baster to deliver the food to the anemone's mouth. You should be warned that they can move around the tank, albeit slowly. This means that you will need to use foam filters over any power head intakes. Many hobbyists have lost anemones because of an unprotected power filter intake! You will probably not want to keep them in a reef tank with corals because they have a sting that can harm corals, fish and other anemones.
